I have an audio output hooked up to my phone line, how do I make the music louder and reduce the white noise?

I have a 3.5mm jack wired to a telephone line. I can hear the music, but only barely, and there is a very loud humming noise in the background. I have tried an isolation transformer and an audio output transformer but have only heard minor improvements. Perhaps I've wired them wrong?
