in george eliot's book, 'silas marner', how is silas marner made interesting for the reader?
i need this for an essay, like 5 pages, so any notes will be very useful!
Silas Marner is a rather passive character and is therefore quite uninteresting. Even his medical condition (he suffers from catalepsy) symbolically illustrates his passivity.
It seems that every event or person around Silas tend to manipulate Silas' fate. Remember when he was accused of stealing (even though he didn't do so) and was excommunicated from the neighboring town? Or how about when his money was stolen? He didn't fight against it, he simply let it be!
But one thing changes Silas' passivity and makes him become an interesting character: when he decides to adopt Eppie, who will "replace" his obsession with money. After this, Silas is no longer the curiosity of the town (with his bent back, his strange eyes and his cataleptic fits). Instead he becomes to embody familial love, and the town's people see him as a kind-hearted person. It is here that he finally becomes the focal point of the novel.
So what makes Silas interesting? his compassion and kindness.
I would suggest you write about:
- his passiveness in the beginning
- his lust for money
- how Eppie makes Silas become interesting.
- his kindness makes him become a focal point in the town and novel and he is no longer seen as the strange antisocial weaver.
