Which male or female player never lived up to their potential?
If you could pick one male or female player that never lived up to their full potential,or was just a complete dissapointment.Who would you pick?
This question really got me thinking as what really constitutes a bust-is it the player who did well,but should have been great or the player who did nothing at all, but could have? I went with should have been all-time great, so here goes:
Men-Marat Safin. 2 Grand slams and he will forever be thought of as a head case who didn't come close to reaching his massive potential. Not only did he destroy Sampras in the US Open final, but the year before, he pummeled Agassi 6-2,6-2 from the baseline in a tier 1 final. I saw that match and thought I was seeing the future of tennis.
Women-tougher pick because you've got about 10 Russian women(Bovina, Myskina,Petrova, Dementyeva, etc) who at 1 time or another looked to be the next #1, but instead look to be another Anna Kournikova. Plus Djokic and Hantuchova are from that same mold(though not Russian). But I'm going with Mary Pierce who had all the weapons and when she was on, could humble other elite players. Her family distractions cost her, but she could have been one of the greats.
I don't buy the arguments about the male junior champs being disappointments. It's actually quite unusual when the junior #1 comes even close to matching his junior success. To be fair,Monfils hasn't had enough time on the tour yet to be considered a bust.
